Happy Fall/Winter Everyone!
In my years with MAAE, I have not experienced a more exciting time to support arts in education. Congress is in the midst of reauthorizing ESSA (now called Every Student Succeeds Act or ESSA), which will allow states to support subjects for ‘a well-rounded education,’ including arts and music. MAAE received maximum funding from MAC for operating this year. We partnered with MAC at the Whole Schools Institute, with workshop sessions, information booth, a graduate course in Arts Integration through MSU, Arts are Core Gallery with student work from throughout the state, our Annual Arts in Education Awards Banquet, and a special visit from Dan Weissman. The generous gift from the Weissman Family Foundation has enabled us to serve twenty schools with our Arts in Academics Program with Teaching Artist Residencies during 2015, and we have just received word that the Foundation will invest in our work again in 2016!
MAAE is working well with our energetic 2015-2016 Board, including new Board member Chris Roebuck, under the leadership of our Executive Committee Brenda Jones (President), Daisha Walker (Past President), Judy Duncan (President Elect), Terrence Roberts, Rori Herbison, Win Maxey-Shumate, and Tito Lanier. We traveled the state to be hosted for our first two meetings at the Delta Arts Alliance and Madison Avenue Lower Elementary. We celebrated National Arts in Education Week in September, National Arts and Humanities Month and Day of Giving in October, and Giving Tuesday in December. We launched the Partners in Art Program, which enables MAAE to work with volunteer schools to target specific schools in need of art supplies and equipment, and we are currently gathering materials for our 3rd school! We partnered with MPB and MSU in our Literacy through Arts, Jumpstart Read for the Record event with the book Not Norman by Kelly Bennett. Please continue sending us your events and how the arts impact your life for our website. It is your input that shows the influence of MAAE and makes our work most vibrant!
The air is crisp, the leaves have turned and fallen, and holiday cheer surrounds us. MAAE wishes you the happiest and most peaceful season of celebration and joy. At this time of uncertainty, we know that the arts are so important daily, and MAAE is committed to talk the talk and walk the walk of arts in education for Mississippi students. What a beautiful time of the year to be sharing the message that kids who participate in the arts develop tolerance, communication proficiency, physical health, focus, collaborative skills, dexterity, passion, problem-solving abilities, commitment, improved memory, healthy risk taking, finesse, and confidence. What better work could we be supporting!
Happy Holidays everyone!
Dr. Penny
